LASIK Eye Exam

2. Eye Exam

Careful evaluation before surgery is required for better long-term results from LASIK. Your doctor will evaluate for eye pressure, infections, inflammations, dryness, and other conditions before the surgery.

  • He will measure the cornea, the shape, thickness and other irregularities. Make sure you completely stop using contact lenses at least one week prior to your pre-surgery consultation. Wearing contact lenses might change the measurement and shape of the cornea.
  • A vision check will be done and assessed if you are safe to undergo the procedure.
  • Remember to tell the doctor your complete surgical and medical history, which you think would be directly and indirectly relevant the procedure.
  • The doctor might also give special instructions depending on your specific conditions.
  • Advanced wave-front guided technology will be used in the evaluation process and the scanner would produce very detailed report to assist the doctor in highly accurate evaluation.
  • All the benefits and any associated risks will be discussed in detail by your doctor before the surgery.

Before LASIK

3. Before LASIK

The procedure takes up usually about 30 minutes or less. During the procedure, you will be made to lie on your back in a reclining chair.

You may be given medicine to help you relax. Numbing drops will be placed in your eye and the doctor uses an instrument to hold your eyelids open. A suction ring would be placed on your eye just before cutting the corneal flap and this may cause a feeling of pressure and your vision may dim a little. During the surgery, you will be asked to focus on a point of light. Staring at this light helps you keep your eye fixed while the laser reshapes your cornea.

Your eye surgeon uses a laser to cut a small hinged flap away from the front of your eye. Folding back the flap allows your doctor to access the part of your cornea to be reshaped. With each pulse of the laser beam, a tiny amount of corneal tissue is removed. After reshaping the cornea, the surgeon lays the flap back into place. The flap usually heals without stitches.

If Lasik procedure is needed in both eyes, the doctor might choose to conduct the procedure on the same day or in two days.

4. After LASIK

Immediately after the procedure, you might feel your eyes itching, feeling gritty, burning, watering and blurred. You might also feel little pain, and you will usually recover your vision quickly, although itwill not be clear right away. It takes about two to three months after your surgery before your eye heals and your vision stabilizes.

You might be given pain killers or eyedrops to keep you comfortable for several hours after the procedure. Your eye doctor might also ask you to wear a shield over your eye at night until your eye heals.

You will have a follow-up appointment with your eye doctor one to two days after surgery. The doctor will see how your eye is healing and check for any complications.

It might be a few weeks before you can start to use cosmetics around your eyes again. You might also have to wait several weeks before resuming strenuous contact sports, swimming or using hot tubs.

Follow your doctor’s recommendations about how soon you can resume your normal activities.
