SMILE is an advanced surgery for enhancing vision and is less invasive as compared to LASIK. It is a one-step procedure and provides enhanced and clear vision.
SMILE, also known as Small Incision Lenticule Extraction which is significantly less invasive than LASIK surgery but provides the results like this surgery. Through a focused, computer-guided LASER, the surgeon makes a small incision on the cornea. With the help of this incision, a small corneal tissue is removed which results in reshaping of the cornea. With the help of highly-focused light, the surgery is done with high precision.
The procedure ends within a minute and the patient starts feeling better within 24 hours after surgery.
As compared to PRK and LASIK surgery, the SMILE is less invasive. During the LASIK surgery, a corneal flap of 20 mm is created while in PRK, an incision of 8-mm is created. In the SMILE, the vision is corrected by creating only a 3 mm incision.
Although LASIK surgery is a highly safe procedure complication may arise in a few patients because of the flap creation. SMILE does not cause flap formation and thus, is safer, as compared to LASIK.
Due to the corneal ablations in LASIK surgery through excimer laser, the patient may smell an odor. As SMILE does not use an excimer laser, the procedure is completely free from the odor.
As the SMILE procedure is minimally invasive, the patient may recover fast and the vision is enhanced within a day after surgery. The results of the SMILE procedure are like that of LASIK surgery.
The patients undergoing SMILE procedure have fewer chances of complications as compared to LASIK surgery. There is less risk of halos or glare complications and have less incidence of dry eye syndrome.
SMILE procedure is effective in those patients who do not meet the criteria for LASIK surgery. These candidates include patients with a thin cornea, suffering from dry eye syndrome, and are involved in contact sports.
Both procedures are used to correct the eye vision and to remove the spectacles and contact lenses. However, SMILE is safer as compared to LASIK surgery. The recovery period in the SMILE procedure is also less as compared to LASIK. SMILE surgery is less invasive and there is no creation of a flap in SMILE procedure.
SMILE is developed by using the traditional system of vision correction with the advancement in reducing the side effects. Experienced ophthalmologists should do SMILE surgery.

A qualified Lasik surgeon would possess an authorized long run fellowship training at best hospitals, international reputed quality care, laser vision correction and a great willingness and ability cope up with the patients throughout their medical journey until solving their problems.
Careful evaluation before surgery is required for better long-term results from LASIK. Your doctor will evaluate for eye pressure, infections, inflammations, dryness, and other conditions before the surgery.
The procedure takes up usually about 30 minutes or less. During the procedure, you will be made to lie on your back in a reclining chair.
You may be given medicine to help you relax. Numbing drops will be placed in your eye and the doctor uses an instrument to hold your eyelids open. A suction ring would be placed on your eye just before cutting the corneal flap and this may cause a feeling of pressure and your vision may dim a little. During the surgery, you will be asked to focus on a point of light. Staring at this light helps you keep your eye fixed while the laser reshapes your cornea.
Your eye surgeon uses a laser to cut a small hinged flap away from the front of your eye. Folding back the flap allows your doctor to access the part of your cornea to be reshaped. With each pulse of the laser beam, a tiny amount of corneal tissue is removed. After reshaping the cornea, the surgeon lays the flap back into place. The flap usually heals without stitches.
If Lasik procedure is needed in both eyes, the doctor might choose to conduct the procedure on the same day or in two days.
Immediately after the procedure, you might feel your eyes itching, feeling gritty, burning, watering and blurred. You might also feel little pain, and you will usually recover your vision quickly, although itwill not be clear right away. It takes about two to three months after your surgery before your eye heals and your vision stabilizes.
You might be given pain killers or eyedrops to keep you comfortable for several hours after the procedure. Your eye doctor might also ask you to wear a shield over your eye at night until your eye heals.
You will have a follow-up appointment with your eye doctor one to two days after surgery. The doctor will see how your eye is healing and check for any complications.
It might be a few weeks before you can start to use cosmetics around your eyes again. You might also have to wait several weeks before resuming strenuous contact sports, swimming or using hot tubs.
Follow your doctor’s recommendations about how soon you can resume your normal activities.
